What to do next? Still looking for a position with a large corporate home health. In July I will start to look at non-healthcare companies, see if I can transition my skills outside home health. But I still have the desire to work for myself. So I plan to do what I have wanted to do for a while. Become a seminar speaker and healthcare management guru.....start with a focus on home health and branch out.
I have the support from Tricha....but my family and friends thinks I'm crazy to do so, get a job is the motto. I do wonder, if I cannot get a job that supports my family, then am I not better creating a job for myself that does? Starting a business is never easy, especially with no startup capital, but seminar speaking requires little capital. The toughest part is creating the material for a seminar that people will buy, and getting them to show up. If I can get people at a seminar then I can do very well. I can work two days a week for 6 months a year doing just seminars. Then create web-in-airs that are recorded to sell and also provide hot topic web-in-ares in person with no travel. With only 20 people at a live seminar at $200 per person, that is $4000; have 30 that is $6000, have 40 then is $8000, etc. Expenses will be around 30%, so I will do well; just have to get the material together and market my services. I can make a living doing what I love to do. Why have I been in Toastmasters for over 10 years, am I not an expert at home health after 15 years? Every time I go to a seminar I have others asking my advice on the topic at hand. I can take my success and failures to teach others how to be better managers, better owners, and successful at their jobs and companies.
In Dale Carnegie book he talks about risk this way....imagine the worst possible outcome and likely everything you do will be better. Worst outcome is I try and fail....we lose our home and have to rent or stay with relatives for a SHORT while. We sell stuff that can be replaced. As long as I have my loved ones, Tricha and Emily, then all else does not matter. If speaking does not work, then I can get a job; Tricha will have completed school in Dec and she can work; next year we can begin to start again. If the speaking works then I will have a job and Tricha can work with me or find a school position. The best outcome is self employment, the reason? Freedom to spend my time how I want it. With employment with a company one gets a steady paycheck and you give your set time in return. Be there at 8 am, leave at 5 pm, with limited personal leaves. Self employment I can work early, work late, or not at all. Take off when I want or need to and no one to tell me otherwise. When it is Friday at 12 pm and no other business to do for the day, I can take off and pick up Emily from school and we can spend extra time together. But on the other hand I have to be self motivated; there is nobody to be accountable too. Over the years I have fired myself many times, but the next day I had to rehire myself to get back to work again.
Right now I am posting a job notice: Needed Self Motivated Seminar Speaker to start new company, research and develop topics related to home health/healthcare, be willing to work for peanuts the first few months, and later reap the rewards. Required 15 years of experience in home health, must have a MBA, and ability to present to large groups of people with humor and think on your feet to answer questions.
Hmmm, how many people do you know fit this position. Maybe I should apply!
